Different Types of Boilers to Install

In today’s boiler market there are tonnes of models to choose from when it comes to having one installed in your home. Improved technology means you don’t have to compromise, although the choice can be a little confusing! Below we’ve written a guide to the main types of boiler options homeowners have, showing their differences and suitability for different homes.

Boiler lowdown by type

Regular boilers

In the past, a regular boiler - also called conventional or traditional, was the only choice you had when getting a new boiler installed. They are still a popular choice and work through use of the boiler itself, a water tank and a cylinder.

Regular boilers suit bigger homes that have more than one bathroom as, thanks to their design, they can power more than one source of water at once. This means you can run a bath in one room and a shower in another. The cylinder also means hot water can be stored for longer. A regular boiler doesn’t heat water instantly, so you have to switch it on or set your thermostat for a certain time.

System boilers

System boilers replicate some features of regular boilers, although they don’t require a separate water tank in the loft so save on storage thanks to an advanced cylinder design.

System boilers also need water heating in advance, which can be saved for use later that day. They allow multiple water sources to be used at once, so again suit homes with a higher demand for water. A system boiler isn’t really necessary for small houses or apartments. System boilers also have the option to be used with solar thermal systems, giving the opportunity to make them green and more environmentally friendly.

Combi boilers

Combi boilers are kind of like an all-in-one boiler, as you don’t require a separate tank or cylinder. They heat your hot water instantly and because of this are thought to be more energy-efficient as there’s no wasted water sat in the tank unused.

Combi boilers are also a good storage-saving solution thanks to being a complete system and not needing to find space for a tank or cylinder.

They’re only suitable, however, for smaller homes with one bathroom. This is because they pipe water directly and don’t have the pressure to send water to multiple sources at once. In real terms, this means you can’t have a shower while someone runs the hot water tap to wash up in the kitchen.
